My Approach What Is Psychotherapy? New Patients

What is Psychotherapy?

Many people who are contemplating entering into therapy do not know first hand
what to expect. Often the only contact with the idea of therapy is through movies,
television or from friends or relatives. There are now multiple web sites where there
is information on therapy and therapists but to the novice on the subject it would be
difficult to know what is accurate. The following are my thoughts on Psychotherapy
including a definition, what it is all about and who does therapy.

Definition:

Psychotherapy is an interpersonal, relational intervention used by trained psychotherapists
to aid clients in problems of living.

Psychotherapists:

Trained psychotherapists are usually licensed and often certified by their professional organizations and include psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses and psychiatric social workers.

Psychotherapy helps persons to:

• Understand their behaviors, emotions and ideas contributing to the present problem.
• Understand and identify the life problems or events contributing to the present  problems and
how they may be able to solve or improve their lives.
• Regain a sense of control and pleasure in life.
• Learn coping techniques and problem-solving skills
